During my first summer, while selling for another company, I was told by one of the owners, "I don't care what you tell them (people who you sell to), just as long as they know its (the contracts) for a year?" Selling that summer for a dishonest company turned me off to sales, and I told my wife that I would never sell again. As the next summer rolled around, I looked at many different jobs; trying to find the one that would best support my family through the next school year. I found that being a technician was the best paying summer job outside of the sales industry. After talking to a few different companies about technician pay scales, I was invited to talk to a representative of Eclipse Marketing. During the interview, the recruiter showed me the huge difference between the pay of sale representatives and the pay of technicians. That interview helped me to reconsider selling again. I decided that it wouldn't hurt to keep an open mind and look at other company's pay scales for sales reps. My greatest desire was to find a company that was honest and would pay their employees well. The 5th company that I talked to was Bulwark Exterminating LLC. To my surprise, my concerns over dishonest selling tactics were resolved while talking to one of the owners. He told me a lot of sales representatives are dishonest because they are uneducated. He also mentioned that those who mislead customers feel worse and worse mentally, until their skills become dulled. Contrasting Bulwark with the other sales teams I talked to, I could tell it was a solid company. After doing my homework, everything felt right, and my wife and I joined on with them. The owners have always kept their word to me and everyone else whom I have worked with. The three summers working for Bulwark have been a good but hard learning experience. There is a lot of information you need to put to memory, but the more you understand it, the more you see the big picture of how to sell in all conditions. Anyone who is willing to get over the frustrating part of sounding dumb on the doors, is willing to soak up information like a sponge, and is a good people person can do well at this. Each day selling, I still find myself learning on a hourly basis. I found that putting learning before selling actually helps me to sell better. This has helped me to earn enough money each summer to support my mine and my wife?s tuition at BYU-I, and the general needs of our small family. Plus we have been able to save and invest instead of going into debt for things.
